The origin of the word Black is from the Old English blæc, which means “dark”. This root also gave rise to the Old word blac, which means “shiny, wan, or pale”. This antithetical combination of black-and-white is symbolic of the appearance of the Black family members – extremely attractive, dark hair, and pale skin. (x)
